English language exams are a common requirement for many international students looking to study abroad in the United States, but keep in mind every students' experience will vary. These proficiency exams are intended to measure the level at which students are able to speak, read, write, and listen to English before being accepted into a U.S. university. Most colleges and universities will require you to submit proof of your score upon application and will have a minimum required score. The end goal is to ensure you will be able to be successful in your course of study without any significant English language barriers.
The tests that are widely accepted by EdAgree partner universities include the TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo tests. Reach out to your EdAgree advisor if you are ever uncertain if a university will accept your exam or score. Not all colleges or universities will require an English language score, as many community colleges will not require you to have taken a proficiency exam prior to admission.
If you are from a country that speaks English as the first language you will may not be required to submit an English language proficiency score. If you think you may be exempt from taking an English language exam please contact your EdAgree advisor for more information.
Timing
It is recommended you take your English language proficiency exam as early as possible to provide ample time to ensure you have met the minimum requirements of the school you intend to apply to. Taking the test about two years prior to when you will be submitting applications gives you time to retake the exam if you need to achieve a higher grade and in general provide a buffer in the chance there were to be any outside complications when taking the exam.

It is incredibly important that you not only give yourself time to take the exam, but also study appropriately. We encourage you to take official practice tests to make sure you have a complete understanding of how your chosen exam will operate and to make sure it is the right test for you!
